These boxes were a bit of an experiment. They are made from American White Oak offcuts kindly donated by a cabinet maker friend.

The technique I was trying is called Shou Sugi Ban or Yakisugi. It is a Japanese process for treating wood to preserve it. The black finish is created by burning the wood and finished using gold embellishing wax.

I am quite pleased with the result.
